The Highly Sensitive Person
A Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) is someone who's emotions and perceptions are very intense. A HSP is often bright, creative, warm and caring. However, they can be easily overwhelmed by situations that provide too much "stimulation," such as environments that are loud or chaotic.
In her groundbreaking work,
The Highly Sensitive Person,
Elaine Aron, Ph.D. provides invaluable information about the traits, needs, and struggles of the HSP.
The HSP tends to:
Be affected by the moods of others Startle easily Feel overwhelmed by loud noises, strong smells, course fabrics Get rattled when asked to do too many things at once Feel strongly affected by music and the arts Be conscientious Need time alone in a quiet environment to decompress
These are just some of the most common traits of the HSP.
Are you a HSP?
Living as a HSP can be difficult. The following is a list of understandings and behaviors that can help HSPs to live happily and healthily:
- You are not "too sensitive," each person is born with a certain level of sensitivity. HSPs bring warmth and depth to the world. You have nothing to appologize for.
- You need plenty of downtime so you can decompress from the intensity of living in this world as a HSP.
- You need extra care. Make sure you get enough: -- Sleep -- Rest -- Alone time -- Exercise -- Fun -- Nurturing social time
All people benefit greatly by making sure that their lives are balanced and have enough of the items listed above. However, it is essential that HSPs take care of themselves in this way, otherwise they feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and often-times physically ill.
HSPs are strongly impacted by life events. Childhood abuse and neglect, along with other traumatic events, can add a great deal of intensity to a HSP's life. If these
core issues
are understood and processed, it can unburden the HSP's nervous system and allow them to live a more balanced, peaceful life.
If you are a HSP, you have much to offer a world that it often too cold and businesslike; you are also high maintenance! You can learn to find peace and appreciate your strengths and gifts if you are willing to understand yourself and care for yourself properly.
